Things to Do

Exmoor National Park

The Exmoor National  Park is a large, beautiful, and peaceful area of wild countryside in the South West of England.

Exmoor National Park was designated in 1954 and covers 267 square miles.  Two-thirds of the park is in Somerset, and the landscape is described as ‘semi-natural’ as it has been influenced by human activity over thousands of years. The Park has a diverse range of habitats with wild upland moors, wooded valleys, and farmland all graced by the wild Exmoor Ponies and its famous Red Deer. Village pubs supply a varied and wholesome range of foods, many of which include local produce.

Horse Riding is one of Exmoor’s wonderful outdoor experiences; you can bring your horse or hire one locally. With 100’s of miles of bridle tracks to explore and see the wild open countryside, coastal paths with stunning scenery. There is a 33-mile ride of the Coleridge Way taking in the Quantock Hills and Exmoor.

The Exmoor Golden Horseshoe endurance ride takes place in May every year. The centre of operations is a field, Imile N of Comers Gate, south of Exford. The event attracts riders from all over the UK and is classed as one of the toughest endurance riding venues in Europe.

Exmoor National Park

The coastline of Exmoor National Park offers stunning views and features coastal paths of varying difficulty for walkers, Riders, and Mountain bikers.  Minehead, just 2 miles away from Dunster, is the start of the Great Southwest Coastal Path, some 630 miles to Poole in Dorset.  There are long sandy beaches, coves and inlets for relaxing on or points to do a little sea fishing from the beach or by boat.

Explore the coastline on the longest Stream train track in the SW. Check out the events at West Somerset Railway, stopping at villages on the route from the sea.

A view of the stars is a view of our natural heritage and a spectacular quality of Exmoor’s nighttime landscape. Dark night skies are a declining resource, threatened by development and the effects of intrusive artificial lighting. To help protect Exmoor’s natural environment, the National Park Authority aims to achieve International Dark Sky Reserve status, an award administered by the International Dark Skies Association.
